WHAT IS hip OSTEOARTHRITIS?

Hip osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition that affects the hip joint, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. It occurs when the cartilage that cushions the bones in the hip joint gradually wears away, leading to bone-on-bone contact and inflammation. If you are experiencing symptoms of hip osteoarthritis, it’s essential to know that there are effective treatment options available, including advanced injection therapies offered by specialised clinics like London Bridge Regen Clinic.

Symptoms of hip Osteoarthritis

The most common symptoms of hip osteoarthritis include:

  1. Pain: This may be a dull ache or a sharp pain in the hip, groin, buttocks, or thigh, especially during movement or weight-bearing activities.
  2. Stiffness: The hip may feel stiff, particularly in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
  3. Reduced mobility: As the condition progresses, it may become increasingly difficult to move the hip through its full range of motion, affecting activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or bending.
  4. Crepitus: A grating or crackling sensation may be felt when moving the hip.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.

Treatments for hip Osteoarthritis

At London Bridge Regen Clinic, we offer several advanced injection therapies for hip osteoarthritis, including:

  1. Cortisone injections: Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory medication that can provide fast-acting relief from pain and inflammation in the hip joint.
  2. Ostenil injections: Ostenil is a high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid injection that helps to lubricate and cushion the hip joint, reducing pain and improving function.
  3. Durolane injections: Durolane is a single-injection hyaluronic acid treatment that provides long-lasting relief from hip osteoarthritis symptoms, with effects that can last up to 6 months or more.

YOUR SIMPLE 4 STEP JOURNEY

Step 1. Free Intial consultation

London Bridge Regenerative clinic gives every patient a free consultation with one of our injecting practitioners.  This includes a free ultrasound scan if required.

There is no obligation to proceed to treatment. The consultation is an opportunity to discuss your issue in detail and the benefits and risks of the procedure.

STEP 2. PHYSICAL EXAM AND ULTRASOUND

We will perform palpation and orthopaedic tests to help confirm your diagnosis.  If required we may also perform a diagnostic ultrasound scan to assist in visualising the issue.  We may also refer you for an X-ray or MRI, depending on the examination findings.

We will allow time to explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have.  We make sure you understand the advantages and risks with the procedure before going ahead.

STEP 3. Injection procedure

You’ll be given individual pre-injection advice to reduce your chance of bleeding or infection and support your recovery and aid healing

It’s important to let your practitioner know if you’re on any prescription or over-the-counter medications. You may be asked to stop taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory tablets, which can increase the risk of bruising. It’s also important to stop smoking cigarettes and e-cigarettes before and after the procedure because they can disrupt the healing process.

A local anaesthetic is only needed for Cortisone, Prolotherapy, Prolozone, and Arthrosamid injections.

Arthrosamid also requires an antibiotic, which must be taken 2 hours before the procedure.

STEP 4: RECOVERY AND FOLLOW UP

Following the procedure, most individuals can return home and resume their normal activities. Our clinical team will be available to offer water and provide guidance on post-injection care.

For the next 48 hours, it’s advisable to refrain from strenuous activities and alcohol consumption. Don’t be alarmed if you don’t notice immediate effects; the duration until you experience a perceptible change depends on the specific injection administered.

A follow-up appointment or phone consultation will be scheduled after the course of treatment to review the progress.

INJECTION TREATMENT OVERVIEW

At London Bridge Regen Clinic, our experienced healthcare professionals use ultrasound guidance to ensure precise delivery of the medication to the affected area, maximising the treatment’s effectiveness.

Each of these injection therapies offers unique benefits for patients with hip osteoarthritis:

Cortisone injections provide rapid relief from pain and inflammation, making them an excellent option for patients seeking quick symptom relief. However, the effects of cortisone may be shorter-lived compared to other injection therapies.

Ostenil injections help to restore the natural lubrication and cushioning of the hip joint, providing both pain relief and improved joint function. Ostenil may require multiple injections for optimal results.

Durolane injections offer the convenience of a single-injection treatment, with long-lasting symptom relief that can last up to 6 months or more. This makes Durolane an attractive option for patients seeking a more extended period of pain relief and improved joint function.

All of these injection therapies are minimally invasive, requiring no surgery or lengthy recovery periods. They can help to reduce pain, improve joint function, and delay the need for more invasive treatments like hip replacement surgery.
