WHAT IS KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS?

Knee osteoarthritis is a common condition that affects millions of people in the UK. It occurs when the cartilage in the knee joint gradually wears away, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, it’s essential to know that there are effective treatment options available, including advanced injection therapies offered by specialised clinics like London Bridge Regen Clinic.

Symptoms of Knee Osteoarthritis

The most common symptoms of knee osteoarthritis include:

  1. Pain: This may be a dull ache or a sharp pain, especially when moving the knee or putting weight on it.
  2. Stiffness: The knee may feel stiff, particularly in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
  3. Swelling: The knee may appear swollen or puffy.
  4. Reduced mobility: As the condition progresses, it may become increasingly difficult to move the knee through its full range of motion.
  5. Crepitus: A grating or crackling sensation may be felt when moving the knee.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan.

Treatments for Knee Osteoarthritis

There are several treatment options available for knee osteoarthritis, depending on the severity of the condition and individual patient needs. These may include:

  1. Lifestyle modifications: Losing weight, engaging in low-impact exercises, and using assistive devices can help reduce stress on the knee joint.
  2. Physical therapy: Strengthening exercises and stretches can help improve joint function and reduce pain.
  3. Medications: Over-the-counter pain relievers, topical creams, and prescription medications may be recommended to manage pain and inflammation.
  4. Injection therapies: Advanced injection treatments, such as Durolane, Ostenil Plus, Arthrosamid, Cortisone, and nSTRIDE, can provide long-lasting relief from symptoms.

Benefits of Injection Therapy for Knee Osteoarthritis

Injection therapies have become increasingly popular for treating knee osteoarthritis, as they offer several advantages over other treatment options:

  1. Targeted relief: Injections deliver medication directly to the affected joint, providing targeted relief from pain and inflammation.
  2. Long-lasting results: Many injection therapies, such as Durolane and Ostenil Plus, can provide symptom relief for several months or even up to a year.
  3. Minimally invasive: Injections are a minimally invasive treatment option, requiring no surgery or lengthy recovery periods.
  4. Improved joint function: By reducing pain and inflammation, injection therapies can help improve joint function and mobility.
  5. Delayed need for surgery: In some cases, injection therapies may help delay or even eliminate the need for knee replacement surgery.

YOUR SIMPLE 4 STEP JOURNEY

Step 1. Free Intial consultation

London Bridge Regenerative clinic gives every patient a free consultation with one of our injecting practitioners.  This includes a free ultrasound scan if required.

There is no obligation to proceed to treatment. The consultation is an opportunity to discuss your issue in detail and the benefits and risks of the procedure.

STEP 2. PHYSICAL EXAM AND ULTRASOUND

We will perform palpation and orthopaedic tests to help confirm your diagnosis.  If required we may also perform a diagnostic ultrasound scan to assist in visualising the issue.  We may also refer you for an X-ray or MRI, depending on the examination findings.

We will allow time to explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have.  We make sure you understand the advantages and risks with the procedure before going ahead.

STEP 3. Injection procedure

You’ll be given individual pre-injection advice to reduce your chance of bleeding or infection and support your recovery and aid healing

It’s important to let your practitioner know if you’re on any prescription or over-the-counter medications. You may be asked to stop taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory tablets, which can increase the risk of bruising. It’s also important to stop smoking cigarettes and e-cigarettes before and after the procedure because they can disrupt the healing process.

A local anaesthetic is only needed for Cortisone, Prolotherapy, Prolozone, and Arthrosamid injections.

Arthrosamid also requires an antibiotic, which must be taken 2 hours before the procedure.

STEP 4: RECOVERY AND FOLLOW UP

Following the procedure, most individuals can return home and resume their normal activities. Our clinical team will be available to offer water and provide guidance on post-injection care.

For the next 48 hours, it’s advisable to refrain from strenuous activities and alcohol consumption. Don’t be alarmed if you don’t notice immediate effects; the duration until you experience a perceptible change depends on the specific injection administered.

A follow-up appointment or phone consultation will be scheduled after the course of treatment to review the progress.
